For two years, a mysterious and increasingly violent criminal terrorized the countryside near Shade Gap, Pennsylvania. One warm spring afternoon in 1966, he committed his penultimate outrage he kidnapped a girl. Taken from her family at gunpoint, Peggy Ann Bradnick was dragged into the impenetrable forests of the Appalachian Mountains. Miraculously, the victim withstood not only the abduction, but the fame that followed it. Fifty years later, the survivor of that weeklong ordeal at the hands of a deranged kidnapper tells her own story, as it has never been told before not only of the crime that changed her life, but the lifetime that has followed.

the Voice in the Mountains Peggy Jackson Chris Armagost 9780998781303 Books

This is a compelling story, told in a straight-forward, clear fashion. It is a bit scary, and a lot refreshing. Peggy Jackson's belief in God carried her through an horrendous ordeal, and gave her the wisdom and courage not to be the judge of the kidnapper. Chris Armagost has taken Peggy Jackson's words and organized them (probably editing some for clarity) and the result is a book I had trouble putting down. The quotes from the kidnapper are clearly stated without putting offensive words and phrases down. The aftermath of the kidnapping - all 50 years of it) are outlined clearly and impress the reader with a good sense of the woman whose strength (as a high schooler) gave her the strength to last through the whole ordeal. This is a compelling read and one that is both easy and difficult to read.

Great book I could not put it down!
It was very interesting to hear Peggy's account of the terrible days of her capture and to hear the accounts of those who waited and worried during those long days.
a very good book !
Love the pictures in the middle! I have read other books and watched the movie but this is the story from HER side. I don't read books as a hobby but this book kept my interest and I couldn't put it down!
This is a true story and one that keeps you up late reading the book. We lived very close to where this happened when it was happening. Peggy is relating details that the news media didn't have. All I can say is that I didn't know how much she went through and only the Grace of God could have allowed her to live through it. God is good.
I have read the other two books, watched the movie, have the original newspapers and magazines from the kidnapping, and have heard Peggy Ann's account of the events. Reading her version as to what she experienced kept me from putting the book down at all. I started reading at 920 pm the day the book arrived and was glued to the story until I finished the last page...after midnight. My husband and his family lived in Shade Gap. The
y were there during the kidnapping and knew everyone involved. His dad and uncles were part of the group searching for her. This book is a must read. Rhonda Glunt
The writing is warm and gracious, her gentle spirit eloquently channelled. Immediately after reading this book, I watched the 1991 movie, "Cry in the Wild The Taking of Peggy Ann." I could understand the elements in the movie with which she took exception, notably stealing food. Also the portrayal of Hollenbaugh was less brutal and a touch more human than her experience with the man. Heath ledger as the Joker came a lot closer. She was an exceptionally mature teenager to be able to separate his torment from her experience and feel compassion for the criminally insane during her ordeal. Her collaboration with Chris Armagost is flawless, a perfect team to communicate her story.
